My card is lost or stolen, how can I pay for purchases or withdraw money ?

We can withdraw money and pay for purchases, even if we do not have a card in our wallet. The answer is on our mobile phone. But there are a few things you need to keep in mind before using it.

According to the Bank of Spain, there are almost 87 million cards in circulation in Spain. From time to time, one of them gets lost, stops working, or, even worse, falls into the hands of those who should not, and we must block it. Considering that we are increasingly turning to cards and that they are also the key to withdrawing money from an ATM, what can we do if we lose ours, are they corrupted, or are they stolen? The answer is in our smartphone. If we run out of a card, and until we receive a new one, we can use our mobile phone to withdraw money from ATMs and pay for the purchases we make.

Withdraw money without a card

Imagine that we forgot our wallet at home and we need to withdraw money, or that, when inserting a card into an ATM, the machine rejects it because it is damaged. Or maybe we lost it or stole it. In many other situations, we may need cash, but not have a card. For these cases, the bank has developed a system that allows its customers to withdraw money without a card at an ATM using a mobile phone.

This service is offered by more than a dozen banks. As a rule, this is free and allows the account holder not only to withdraw money from an ATM, but also to use it to send cash to another person and receive it from an ATM without a card and without being a customer.

In most organizations, you only need to access their application from your mobile phone, specify the amount you want to withdraw from the ATM and accept the transaction, although some also allow you to complete the process through the bank's web platform or by phone.

Finally, you only need to go to the bank teller and enter the code provided by the bank. If we want someone else to collect the money, we will need to provide a pin code. Cash withdrawal codes usually expire between one and ten days, depending on the organization. If the money is not finally withdrawn, it will be available again in the client's account.

Some banks are connected to the HalCash service, which has a network of about 12,000 ATMs. Thanks to this, and through their mobile phones, your customers will be able to withdraw money without a card, not only at the terminals of your organization, but also at the terminals of other banks connected to the system.

On the other hand, some organizations offer other alternatives to withdrawing cash without a card:

work at an ATM with remote banking codes.

do it through the bank window, but he may charge us a commission for this operation, especially if our account is virtual. In addition, not all organizations have an extensive network of offices; some digital banks don't even have a physical presence.

Pay for the purchase with your mobile phone

If we have lost our card or it has been stolen, the first thing we must do is to block it temporarily until we find it, or permanently, and request another. But how do you pay for purchases until a new one arrives? It is ideal to have at least a couple of cards in case we find ourselves in such a situation, but if this is not the case, our mobile phone can help us again.

Some banks allow you to request a debit card and link it to a wallet like Apple Pay or Google Pay, or to the bank's own virtual wallet. Thus, before a new one physically reaches us, we can start using it through a mobile phone. This is, for example, possible with object N26. Of course, in these cases, restrictions may apply, such as, for example, that there is a maximum amount that can be spent per day, or that only the digital version can be used for a certain period of time with the goal that when we receive the physics version, let's activate.

In other cases, the bank allows you to request virtual debit or prepaid cards, that is, "plastic" cards that do not physically exist, but which can be used to shop online or in street shops if they are associated with a virtual wallet. Openbank and Revolut offer this service. In these cases, since it is a digital card, it can be used immediately after the contract is signed and can be a good alternative to pay for purchases when the physical card is delivered home.
